Nuevo trabajo de la banda que desde Canadá lidera Lionel Pezzano. "Joy of the 4th" es el quinto álbum de su carrera discográfica sumergiéndonos en los sonidos de psicodelia-pop con influencias occidentales y orientales donde hay un ambiente de plena gira psicodélica con una instrumentación sólida en donde brilla cada tema a base de optimismo, energía y baladista. Un disco que muestra su alta calidad en cada nuevo artefacto lleno de profundidad y maneras de desarrollar tema a tema. Con Lionel nos ponemos en la realidad actual de Bhopal Flowers.

Lionel, los inicios de la banda se remontan a 2016 con el lanzamiento de vuestro primer álbum "Lovesong & psychedelic tones", ahora mismo tenéis un quinto álbum "Joy of the 4th", ¿qué sentimiento tenéis en cada álbum lanzado?
Cada álbum es un nuevo paso hacia lo desconocido, así como una emoción por explorar nuevos territorios musicales y profundizar en direcciones artísticas, hasta entonces, tímidamente abordadas. Pero una nueva sensación ha aparecido con 'Joy Of The 4th', que cierra un capítulo iniciado en 2016 con 'Lovesongs & Psychedelic Tones'.

- Vuestros discos nos llevan a diferentes viajes llenos de belleza a través del pop cósmico psicodélico.
Gracias por estos comentarios, la verdad es que son sus objetivos. Significa mucho para mí que pienses así de la música de Bhopal's Flowers.

- En las letras se respira un aire de belleza y felicidad, ¿qué mensajes queréis transmitirnos en cada composición?
Nuestro mensaje es espiritual: el ser humano es responsable del desarrollo cósmico, depende de la humanidad hacer crecer la Creación de Dios. Para conseguirlo, nosotros, la humanidad, tenemos que entender el mundo espiritual igual que empezamos a entender el mundo físico a finales de la Edad Media.
El amor, la felicidad y el desarrollo del arte son algunas de las claves para tener éxito en este camino.

- ¿Es el sitar y la Rickenbacker un elemento clave en todos los sonidos de Bhopal Flowers?
Por supuesto. Como el conocimiento antroposófico es la parte supersensible de nuestra música, la parte de Bhopal's Flowers profundamente incrustada en la mater es hecha por este dúo. El Rickenbacker ofrece este sonido jangly que he fantaseado durante mucho tiempo, y mientras tanto, un gran instrumento para tocar música modal, al igual que hacemos con los instrumentos orientales.
El sitar también colma mi sueño adolescente de conseguir esta vibración psicodélica de los 60, pero es más el concepto del raga y el espíritu de la música clásica indostánica lo que alimenta las composiciones.

- ¿Cómo fue la preparación, elaboración y grabación de "Joy of the 4tn"?
Dediqué más espacio a las composiciones de lo habitual y tuve la paciencia suficiente para dejar un margen a la creatividad durante el proceso de mezcla. Me sentí más cómodo tomándome el tiempo necesario para captar el sonido directamente como lo imaginaba, y no apresurándome a grabar las tomas una tras otra, como solía hacer en los discos anteriores. El ritmo de 'Joy Of The 4th' se ha basado en las reglas de la vida: tómate tu tiempo, disfruta haciendo lo que haces y, como manda la naturaleza, sé paciente.

- Un álbum lleno de alegría y melodías brillantes con sonidos psych-pop luminosos, ¿tú también lo ves así?
Oh, sí. Escribimos y cantamos las cosas que vemos, y la mayoría de las cosas que me rodearon durante todo el proceso de este disco eran coloridas, joviales, dulces y brillantes, como pueden ser los juguetes de bebé. Tengo que mencionar que mi estudio en casa estaba en ese momento situado en el dormitorio de mi hijo recién nacido: guitarras, micrófonos y sitar eran compañeros de habitación con juegos de despertar y ositos de peluche. Si quieres saber cómo es la habitación de un bebé, escucha "Joy Of The 4th".

- La producción del álbum podría decirse que es profunda y vintage al mismo tiempo, ¿qué te parece?
Ha sido con total conciencia que he producido el álbum de esta manera. Como hoy en día podemos restituir una imagen sonora más precisa con nuestra tecnología contemporánea, mi directriz era respetar el sentido común y utilizar lo mejor que ofrece nuestra época. Mientras tanto, intenté conseguir el efecto cálido que tanto nos gusta de los discos antiguos: dulces saturaciones armónicas y frecuencias medias lechosas. Estoy muy contento con el sonido de este disco, aunque el vinilo tiene un fallo en el estribillo de 'Summertime' (un error que ocurrió durante el proceso de prensado) que afortunadamente sólo aparece en los estribillos de este tema, lo cual ya es muy doloroso para mis oídos, pero no aparece en las versiones en cd (¡gracias a Dios!).

- En cuanto al enfoque de la instrumentación se nota esa influencia oriental, ¿cómo trabajaste este concepto?
Intento tender puentes entre la música modal (oriental) y la tonal (occidental) tanto como puedo, porque es un paso que tenemos que dar. El paso más evolucionado de la evolución no es el más complejo, sino el que ha resuelto la complejidad con una forma muy simple. La armonía ha desarrollado su belleza desde que el Renacimiento llevó la música allí donde el sistema modal (canto gregoriano y culturas orientales) nunca podría haber llegado. El reto de la música del mañana será mantener la esencia de la música tonal en una música modal. Quiero dejar las cosas claras y evitar malentendidos: no tenemos que retroceder en el sistema modal, tenemos que dar un nuevo paso hacia algo tan poderoso como el nacimiento de la música polifónica: una polifonía que pueda expresar su potencial a través de una monodia. No viviré lo suficiente en esta vida para escuchar eso de mis oídos, pero quiero que la gente mire en esa dirección escuchando mi música.

- Dos baladas que me impresionaron del álbum son "Running wild with Us" y "Alright", ¿qué puede decirme de estas dos canciones?
Me alegro de que mencione estas dos canciones, sobre todo "Alright", porque últimamente no sabía qué pensar de ella. Mi madre vive la mitad del año en la vieja casa familiar de Campello, cerca de Alicante, en España. La escena que describo en esta canción (una pareja de ancianos viendo la puesta de sol con una pizza para llevar como comida) ha sucedido en realidad. Nunca les dije a mis padres que había escrito una canción sobre ese momento. Running Wild With Us" es, de lejos, la canción que más aprecio de este disco. Una semana después del nacimiento de mi hijo, tuvieron que ingresarlo en el hospital y, como padres jóvenes, la idea de perder a nuestro hijo nos destrozó. Salió del hospital sano y salvo, pero ''Running Wild With Us'' es lo que le habría cantado al oído si hubiera podido hablar con él (no pude quedarme con él en el hospital por la restricción de covida). De todos modos, el tema aún no estaba escrito. Entonces aproveché para añadir más versos para dejar un mensaje como ''Boy when you'll be a man if you know the pain - Always keep in your brain - Rainbows come after rain - Love is all in your hands'', palabras útiles para un alma gentil que vive en la Tierra.


- El álbum sale con Sound Effect Records, el anterior con Kool Kat Music y también habéis grabado con Hypnotic Bridge Records.
¿Cómo han sido las relaciones de la banda con todos estos sellos?
En realidad el anterior, ''Alstroemeria'' ha sido editado con Sugarbush Records en doble vinilo y en cd con Kool Kat Records. Fuerzas oscuras ensombrecieron el lanzamiento de este ambicioso álbum: Sugarbush Records no imprimió, como habíamos acordado en un principio, el encarte con las letras y los créditos. Los he añadido por mi cuenta en las copias que recibí del sello, pero saber que la gente que hace pedidos directamente a Sugarbush no recibe créditos ni letras es un poco triste. Pero la música existe, impresa y vendida a los melómanos, eso es lo esencial.
Las expériences de Hypnotic Bridge Records y Sound Effect Records han superado las expectativas de cualquier músico: enriquecedoras y justas, hechas por constantes intercambios de ideas y siempre buscando alcanzar las estrellas. No podría decirte cómo son estas personas, cuál es el color de sus cabellos o el sonido de su voz, pero sí puedo decirte mucho sobre cómo es y brilla su alma. De alma a alma, ¡así es como trabajamos!

- A finales de año tocasteis en el Festival Mantarinosoupa, ¿cómo fue la experiencia de vuestra participación en el festival?
Ojalá hubiera podido ser, pero no, no hemos tocado allí, ni en ningún otro sitio desde que la pandemia empezó a romper la formación original de Bhopal's Flowers. De hecho, nuestro antiguo batería, Jeremy Thoma, ha abandonado Norteamérica para siempre en la primera fase de la ola covídica. Como produzco la música yo solo en el estudio y el proceso creativo no es una democracia en Bhopal's Flowers, ha sido difícil mantener la cohesión con un nuevo batería para los directos y los ensayos. Sólo desde hace unos meses tenemos una nueva formación estable para los directos, con Eric Lamothe a la batería, y Cristophe Cinq al sitar, con nuestro fiel y querido Jonathan St Laurent al bajo / coros, y Blandine Pezzano-Miart a las percusiones y apoyo vocal. Nuestros próximos conciertos serán esta primavera, un nuevo capítulo que estamos encantados de abrir.

- Es un largo camino desde Montreal a España, pero ¿tendremos alguna vez la oportunidad de ver a Bhopal Flowers en directo en España?
Jajaja ¡sí, eso esperamos! Me río porque paso la mayor parte de las vacaciones de verano en España, en Campello, como he dicho antes. Sólo Dios sabe (y los que reservan también) si estaremos de gira por allí, pero una cosa es segura: si te acercas a la orilla de la playa del Río Seco de Campello por la noche en verano, me oirás cantar algunas canciones de Bhopal, apoyado por mi mujer que hace los coros. De hecho, en el mismo lugar donde mis padres tuvieron la escena de la pizza al atardecer que me inspiró la canción 'Alright'. El círculo se ha completado.

- Lionel, este "Joy of the 4tn" está dedicado a tu hijo, ¿ha sido él parte de tu inspiración a la hora de componer este álbum?
Noël me ha susurrado la música al oído, yo sólo tenía que grabarla, ¡así que él se merece todos los créditos! Para que se haga una idea más detallada de la progresión del álbum, desde la pista uno hasta la seis, "Joy Of The 4th" es un álbum de fotos de los 9 meses y el primer año a su lado. De la pista siete al final, es más bien una proyección del futuro, cartas que se dejan aquí y allá en cajas y cajones de escritorio, para ser leídas con el paso de los años.
El efecto mágico reside en el hecho de que por la encarnación de este ser, el poder y el efecto de la cuarta nota (de la escala), "Fa" en el lenguaje occidental, "Ma" en la música clásica india, irradia su luz sobre nuestras vidas, y por tanto en mi música.

- Por último, ¿qué bandas han sido su influencia en el paisley psicodélico de 67-68?
(No estoy muy seguro de si hablas del paisley underground de los 80 o de las bandas de la época de los 60). Perdona mi pobre respuesta en este tema pero no soy muy docto en cuanto a quién hizo qué en el 67-68. Recientemente, estaba totalmente subyugado por el sunshine pop como The Seekers, The Peppermint Trolley Company, The Happy Sunshine Company. Pero con un pensamiento más objetivo, el álbum 'SMILE!' (versiones de Brian Wilson y The Beach Boys) realmente ha sido una influencia en 'Joy Of The 4th'. Puedes sentirlo fácilmente en la canción de apertura "Joy Of The 4th", cuando el slide whistle y los sonidos de dibujos animados "boing" propagan sus buenas vibraciones en el puente, y por supuesto, en "Babyphone" y sus orquestaciones de juguetes para bebés.

New work of the band that from Canada leads Lionel Pezzano. "Joy of the 4th" is the fifth album of their recording career immersing us in the sounds of psychedelic-pop with western and eastern influences where there is an atmosphere of full psychedelic tour with a solid instrumentation where each theme shines based on optimism, energy and balladeer. An album that shows its high quality in each new artifact full of depth and ways to develop track by track. With Lionel we get into the current reality of Bhopal Flowers.

Lionel, the beginning of the band dates back to 2016 with the release of your first album "Lovesong & psychedelic tones", right now you have a fifth album "Joy of the 4th", what feeling do you have in each album released?
Each album is a new step towards the unknown, as well as an excitement to explore new musical territories and go deeper into artistic directions, until then, timidly approched. But a new feeling has appear with 'Joy Of The 4th', that closes a chapter started in 2016 with 'Lovesongs & Psychedelic Tones'.

- Your albums take us to different journeys full of beauty through cosmic psychedelic pop.
Thanks for this feedback, it is actually their goals. It means a lot to me that you feel this way about Bhopal’s Flowers’ music.

- In the lyrics there is an air of beauty and happiness, what messages do you want to send us in each composition?
Our message is spiritual : the human being is responsible for cosmic development, it is up to mankind to make God's Creation grows. To achieve this, we, the mankind, now have to understand the spiritual world just as we begun to understand the physical world at the end of the Middle Ages.
Love, hapiness and art development are some of the keys to succeed in this path.

- Is the sitar and Rickenbacker a key element in all the sounds of Bhopal Flowers?
Definitely ! As the anthroposophic knowlege is the supersensitive part of our music, the Bhopal’s Flowers part deeply embeded into the mater is made by this duet. The Rickenbacker offers this jangly sound that I have long fantasized, and in the mean time, a great instrument to play modal music, just as we do with eastern instruments.
The sitar also fills my teenage dream to get this 60's psychedelic vibe, but it is more the concept of the raga and the spirit of Hindustani Classical Music that feed the compositions.

- How was the preparation, elaboration and recording of "Joy of the 4tn"?
I kept more space into the compositions than usual and was patient enough to leave a room for creativity during the mixing process. I felt more comfortable to take the time to capture the sound directly as imaginated, and not to rush to record the takes one after one, as I used to do on the previous records. ‘Joy Of The 4th’ has been paced by the life rules: take your time, enjoy to do the thing you do, and as the nature rules, be patient.

- An album that is full of joy and bright melodies with bright psych-pop sounds. do you see it that way too?
Oh yes, I do ! We write and sing the things we see, and most of the things that surrounded me during the whole process of this record where colorfull, jovial, sweet and shinny, as baby toys can be. I have to mention that my home studio was at that time located in the bedroom of my newborn son : guitars, microphones and sitar where roomates with awakening games and teady bears. So here it is: you want to know how looks the bedroom of a baby, listen to 'Joy Of The 4th' !

- The production of the album could be said to be deep and vintage at the same time. what do you think?
It has been in total consciousness that I produced the album in this way. As we can nowadays restitute a more precise sound image with our contemporary technology, my guideline was to respect the common sense and to use the best that our time offers. In the mean time, I tried to get the warm effect we love on old records: sweet harmonic saturations & milky mid frequencies. I am really happy with the sound of this record, even though the vinyl has a bug on the chorus of 'Summertime' (a mistake that hapened during the pressing process) that fortunately only appears on the choruses of this track, which is already very painfull to my ears, but doesn't appear on the cd versions (thanks God !).

- In terms of the instrumentation approach you can feel that oriental influence, how did you work with this concept?
I try to dig bridges between modal (Eastern) and tonal (Western) music as much as I can, because it is a step we have to head. The most evolved step of evolution is not the most the complex but the one that has solved complexity with a very simple shape. Harmony has developped its beauty since the Renaissance brought music where modal system (Gregorian chant and Eastern cultures) could never have lead. The challenge of the music of tomorrow will be to keep the essence of tonal music in a modal music. I want to make the things clear and avoid misunderstood: we don't have to backtrack the modal system, we have to take a new step into something as powerfull as the birth of polyphonic music: a polyphony that can express its potential through a monody. I won't live long enough in this life to hear that from my ears, but I want the people to look in that direction by listening to my music.

- Two ballads that impressed me on the album are "Running wild with Us" and "Alright", what can you tell me about these two songs?
I am glad you mention these two tracks, especially 'Alright' because I didn't know what to think about it recently. My mother lives half of the year in the old familly house in Campello, near by Alicante in Spain. The scene I describe is this song (an old couple watching the sunset with a take away pizza for a meal) has actually happened. I never told my parents I wrote a song about this moment. 'Running Wild With Us' is from far away a track I cherish the most on this record. A week after my son's birth, he had to be admitted to hospital and as young parents, the idea of losing our child broke us. He went out the hospital alive and well, but ''Running Wild With Us'' is what I would have sing to his ears if I could have talk to him (I couldn't stay with him at the hospital because of the covid restriction). Anyway, the track wasn't already written at this time ! I then grabed the opportunity to add more verses to leave message such as ''Boy when you'll be a man if you know the pain - Always keep in your brain - Rainbows come after rain - Love is all in your hands'', useful words for a gentle soul living on Earth.


- The album is released on Sound Effect Records, the previous one with Kool Kat Music and you have also recorded with Hypnotic Bridge Records.
How have the band's relationships with all these labels been?
Actually the previous one, ''Alstroemeria'' has been released with Sugarbush Records on double vinyl and on cd with Kool Kat Records. Obscure forces overshadowed the release of this ambitious album : Sugarbush Records didn't print as we originally concluded, the insert with lyrics, credits. I've added them on my own on the copies I got from the label, but knowing that people who order directly from Sugarbush don't get credits and lyrics is a bit sad. But the music exists, printed and sold to music lovers, that is the essential.
The Hypnotic Bridge Records and Sound Effect Records expériences have been beyond any musician expectations: enriching and fair, made by constant shares of ideas and always looking to reach the stars. I couldn't tell you how these people are looking, what is the color of their hairs or the sound of their voice, but I can tell you a lot about how their soul looks and shines. Soul to soul, that's the way we worked !

- At the end of the year you played at the Mantarinosoupa Festival, how was the experience of your participation in the festival?
I wish it could have happen but no, we haven't played there, as well as anywhere else since the pandemic has started to break up original Bhopal's Flowers line up. Indeed, our former drummer, Jeremy Thoma, has left North America for good at the early stage of the covid wave. As I produce the music all by myself in studio and that the creative process is not a democracy in Bhopal's Flowers, it has been tough to maintain a cohesion with a new drummer for live shows and rehearsals. It is only since a few months that we have a new stable line up for the live shows, with Eric Lamothe on drums, and Cristophe Cinq on the sitar, with our fidelious & beloved Jonathan St Laurent on bass / backing vocals, and Blandine Pezzano-Miart on percussions and vocal support. Our upcoming shows will be this spring, a new chapter we are glad to open.

- It's a long way from Montreal to Spain, but will we ever get the chance to see Bhopal Flowers live in Spain?
Hahaha yes we hope ! I laugh because I spend most of the summers vacation in Spain, in Campello, as said earlier. God only knows (and bookers too) if we'll be touring over there, but one thing is sure: if you come to the shore of the Rio Seco beach of Campello at night during summertime, you'll hear my singing some Bhopal's songs, supported by my wife who sings the backing vocals. Actually, in the very same spot where my parents had the pizza-sunset-scene that inspired me the song 'Alright'. The circle is complete !

- Lionel, this "Joy of the 4tn" is dedicated to your son, has he been part of your inspiration when composing this album?
Noël has been whispering the music to my ears, I just had to record it, so he deserves all the credits ! To give you a more detailed view of the album progression, from track one to track six, ‘Joy Of The 4th’ is a photo album of the 9 months and the first year beside him. From track sevent to the end, it is more a projection of the futur, letters you leave here in there in boxes and desk drawers, for to be read over the years.
The magic effect resides in the fact that by the incarnation of this being, the power and the effect of the fourth note (of the scale), ‘Fa’ in Western language,‘Ma’ in Indian classical music, radiates its light on our lives, and therefore in my music.

- Finally, which bands have been your influence in the psychedelic paisley of 67-68?
(I’m not really sure if you talk about the paisley underground from the 80's or the bands from the 60's era). Excuse my poor answer on this subject but I am not really very learned regarding who did what in 67-68. Recently, I was totally subjuged by sunshine pop such of The Seekers, The Peppermint Trolley Company, The Happy Sunshine Company. But with a more objective thought, 'SMILE!' album (Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys versions) really has been an influence on 'Joy Of The 4th'. You can easilly feel it on the opening track 'Joy Of The 4th', when slide whistle and cartoon 'boing' sounds are spreading their good vibes on the bridge, and of course, on ‘Babyphone’ and its baby toys orchestrations.
