En primer lugar, ¿puedes decirme de dónde viene el nombre de la banda?
Viene de un episodio de Batman de 1967. El Acertijo era el villano y secuestraba y lavaba el cerebro a un boxeador llamado Kid Gulliver. Habíamos estado buscando un nombre para el grupo y enseguida supimos que era ese. Gran episodio, por cierto, pero realmente extraño.
¿Cuánto tardasteis en formar la banda, porque tanto David como Simone se conocen desde hace mucho tiempo, cuál fue ese momento clave?
Nos conocemos desde hace muchos años y él tocaba el bajo en mi propio grupo, Sugar Snow. Había estado intentando convencerme de que esto del power pop era para mí, pero no me convencía. Cuando Sugar Snow llegó a su fin como banda, decidimos intentarlo. ¡Era realmente terrible!
Al mismo tiempo tienes otra banda alternativa llamada Sugar Snow.
Sugar Snow fue mi primer proyecto musical, mi primera composición, mi primer canto, mi primer todo. Empecé a tocar música muy tarde, cuando tenía cuarenta años. Fue una crisis de los cuarenta superproductiva.
La música melancólica es realmente donde vivo. He grabado mucho con Sugar Snow, cosas muy variadas, incluida una versión de principio a fin de la obra maestra de Crowded House, Woodface. Estoy muy orgulloso de mi trabajo en solitario. Pero no podría ser más diferente de Kid Gulliver.
La primera vez que escuché un tema de Kid Gulliver fue una sorpresa total, sonidos brillantes, coloridos y satisfactorios al máximo, ¿cómo queríais llegar al público con vuestros sonidos?
Buscamos lo brillante y colorido, es una buena forma de decirlo. Nos esforzamos por conseguir que una canción se te quede grabada en la cabeza. A veces son más malhumoradas, como Boy in a Bubble, a veces pop puro como I Wanna Be a Pop Star, y a veces serias y poperas como Susie Survived Chemotherapy.
¿Cómo trabajáis los sonidos y las composiciones de Kid Gulliver?
David es el compositor y arreglista de todas las canciones de Kid Gulliver. Hace una maqueta completa de la canción y la envía a la banda como punto de partida. Trabajamos en ella en los ensayos, pero todo es cosa de David. Yo soy la Mariah Carey de esta banda.
Power-pop de muchos quilates envuelto en energía y melodía dentro de una personalidad propia y con influencias en los sesenta y ochenta es la reacción que tengo ante vuestros brillantes sonidos, ¿estás de acuerdo?
Sin duda. Los primeros Beatles y los primeros Who, garaje, grupos de chicas, New Wave y algo de los 90 también, como The Primitives. Todo se echa en una olla y se mezcla, y eso es Kid Gulliver.
Vuestro EP "Gimme some go" consta de cuatro temas variados que van del power-pop al ska, ¿cómo habéis preparado este primer álbum?
En realidad es nuestro tercer EP. Tenemos un CD autotitulado con el peor artwork del mundo y luego un EP llamado Spree. Gimme Some Go era una canción ska que David escribió hace años y quería probar, y creo que es bastante buena. Aunque nunca la hemos tocado en directo. Quizá deberíamos hacerlo.
Cómo os afectó el Covid, ¿retrasó el lanzamiento de vuestro primer álbum?
La verdad es que Covid nos vino genial, por raro que suene. Yo vivía en mi casa de Vermont, que está a unas dos horas y media de Boston, y pude concentrarme en Vermont para grabar vídeos y trabajar en la música. Viajaba a Boston para grabar. Trabajé en la parte comercial de la banda sin interrupciones. Vivir en el bosque me viene muy bien.
¿Cómo fue la elaboración y grabación del primer álbum de larga duración de la banda, llamado "Kismet"?
Se grabó a lo largo de varios años y se terminó en unos pocos meses concentrados. Grabar lleva mucho tiempo y nunca suena bien cuando se hace con prisas, al menos no para nosotros. Así que nos llevó mucho tiempo porque queríamos hacerlo bien. Estamos muy contentos con el disco".
Un álbum compuesto por las cuatro canciones del Ep y ocho temas antiguos que nunca habíais publicado, ¿cómo fue la selección de canciones para "Kismet"?
Esperábamos tener un vinilo prensado de un disco completo, así que quisimos poner nuestros "grandes éxitos" más el EP Gimme Some Go. Es básicamente nuestro directo. Elegimos las canciones que más nos gustan, que la gente parece disfrutar, y las metimos todas en un cómodo paquete. Con el mejor artwork de mi amiga Nicole Anguish de Daykamp Creative.
Pistas en constante ebullición de guitarras, voces y melodías que suenan contagiosas que hacen de este primer trabajo completo con todos los calificativos de manera positiva, ¿de qué manera ha reaccionado el público a este primer trabajo?
Ha sido increíble. Ha sido todo lo que esperábamos y más. Saber que nuestra música suena en todo el mundo y que nuestro disco está en las tiendas de toda Europa es un sueño hecho realidad. España nos ha apoyado especialmente, ¡así que gracias a todos!
Las letras del disco tienen un alto componente de problemas de la sociedad.
Desde luego, esa no era la intención cuando se escribieron. David no se propuso hablar de los problemas del mundo, se trataba más bien de lo que sentía en ese momento. Algunas se basan en experiencias personales, otras son observaciones y otras simplemente tonterías. Stupid Little Girl viene de ver demasiado True Crime en la tele.
Hay dos temas que quería desarrollar un poco en "Stupid little girl" y "Beauty school dropout".
Stupid Little Girl trata del fenómeno real y extraño de las mujeres que se enamoran de presos del corredor de la muerte y consideran que tienen una relación. Es descarado y fue divertido hacer ese vídeo.
Beauty School Dropout trata de encajar, de no tener el tipo de belleza que se considera deseable. Es una especie de himno de "Sé quien eres" y una gran canción para cantar en los conciertos. Es una canción que se te queda grabada en la cabeza.
¿Tendremos un nuevo álbum de Kid Gulliver en 2023?
Esperamos que sí. Hay algunas canciones que tenemos que terminar, pero si todo va bien, tendremos algo nuevo este año. Crucemos los dedos.
¿Qué me puedes decir de grupos de la escena power-pop actual como The Yum Yums y otros como ellos?
The Yum Yum son fantásticos. Morten ha llevado la camiseta de nuestro grupo en fotos y eso es emocionante. Tiene tanta facilidad para escribir canciones. Son bastante perfectas con melodía, letra y ganchos. Nos encantaría dar un concierto con ellos. ¿Puede alguien ayudarnos con esto, por favor?
The Courettes son geniales. The Darts me encantan. Hay un grupo fantástico de Madrid con el que compartimos cartel que se llama Boston Babies. Hay demasiados para enumerarlos.
Por último, recientemente han suspendido su gira por España. ¿Habrá alguna posibilidad de retomar las fechas de nuevo?
Espero que sí. No sé cuándo ni dónde, pero el objetivo es volver a España y pasarlo bien. Tocar allí fue la mejor experiencia de mi vida musical y estoy deseando volver.

Another surprise that 2022 brought us was the debut of the Boston band Kid Gulliver with their debut album entitled "Kismet" in which they unleash energetic and melodic songs around the sounds of Power-Pop. There is no lack of new wave and punk inlays either, developing fresh and original sounds that will hopefully be followed up with a second album later this year. We contacted the band's singer Simone Berk to find out more about Kid Gulliver.
First of all, can you tell me where the name of the band comes from?
It comes from a 1967 episode of Batman! The Riddler was the villain, and he kidnaps and brainwashes a boxer called Kid Gulliver. We had been looking for a band name and we knew immediately that was it. Great episode, by the way, but really weird.
How long did it take you to form the band, because both David and Simone have known each other for a long time, what was that key moment?
We have known each other for many years and he played bass in my own band Sugar Snow. He had been trying to convince me that this power pop thing was for me, but I wasn’t sold. When Sugar Snow as a performing band came to an end, we decided to try. I was really, really terrible!
At the same time you have another alternative band called Sugar Snow.
Sugar Snow was my first musical project, first songwriting, first singing, first everything. I started playing music really late, when I was forty. It was a super-productive mid-life crisis.
Melancholy music is really where I live. I’ve done a lot of recording with Sugar Snow, a variety of stuff, including a beginning-to-end cover record of the Crowded House masterpiece, Woodface. Very proud of my solo work. But it couldn’t be more different than Kid Gulliver.
The first time I heard a Kid Gulliver track it was a total surprise, sounds that are bright, colourful and satisfying to the max, how did you want to reach the audience with your sounds?
We aim for the bright and colorful, that is a good way to put it. We strive to get a song stuck in your head. Sometimes they are more moody, like Boy in a Bubble, sometime pure pop like I Wanna Be a Pop Star, and sometimes serious and poppy like Susie Survived Chemotherapy.
How do you work on the sounds and compositions in Kid Gulliver?
David is the songwriter and arranger of all the Kid Gulliver songs. He demos the song completely and sends it out to the band as a starting point. We will work on it in practice, but it’s all David. I am just the Mariah Carey of this band!
Power-pop of many carats wrapped up in energy and melody within a personality of your own and with influences in the sixties and eighties is the reaction I have to your brilliant sounds, do you agree?
Definitely. Early Beatles and early Who, garage, girl groups, New Wave and some 90’s too, like The Primitives. Everything is thrown into a pot and mixed together, and that’s Kid Gulliver.
Your EP "Gimme some go" consisted of four varied tracks ranging from power-pop to ska, how did you prepare this first album?
It is actually our third EP. We have a self-titled CD with the world’s worst artwork and then an EP called Spree. Gimme Some Go was a ska song David wrote years ago and wanted to try, and I think it is pretty great. We’ve never played it live, though. Maybe we should!
How did the Covid affect you, did it delay the release of your first album?
Covid was actually great for us, as weird as that sounds. I was living in my house in Vermont, which is about 2.5 hours from Boston, and I was able to have concentrated time in Vermont to film videos and work on music. I made trips to Boston to record. I worked on the business end of the band with no interruption. Living in the woods is really good for me.
How was the elaboration and recording of the first full-length album of the band called "Kismet"?
It was recorded over several years, and then finished in a few concentrated months. Recording is really time consuming and never sounds good when it’s rushed, at least not for us. So it took a long time because we wanted to make it great. We are really happy with it as a record.
An album consisting of the four songs of the Ep and eight old songs that you had never released before, how was the selection of songs for "Kismet"?
We hoped to have vinyl pressed of a full length record, so we wanted to put our “greatest hits” plus the EP Gimme Some Go. It is basically our live set. We chose the songs that we love, that people seem to enjoy, and stuck them all into one convenient package. With the best artwork by my friend Nicole Anguish of Daykamp Creative.
Tracks in constant boiling of guitars, voices and melodies that sound contagious that makes this first complete work with all the qualifiers in a positive way, in what way has the public reacted to this first work?
It’s been amazing! It’s been everything we hoped for and then some. To know that our music is being played all over the world and our record in in shops all over Europe is a dream come true. Spain has been especially supportive, so thank you guys most of all!
The lyrics of the album have a high component of society's problems.
That was certainly not the intention when they were written. David didn’t set out to talk about the world’s problems, it was more about what he was feeling at the time. Some of them were based on personal experience, some are observational and some just silly. Stupid Little Girl comes from watching too much True Crime on tv.
There are two themes that I wanted to develop a bit in "Stupid little girl" and "Beauty school dropout".
Stupid Little Girl is about the real and bizarre phenomenon of women who fall in love with Death Row inmates and consider themselves in a relationship. It is cheeky and boy, was that video fun to make.
Beauty School Dropout is about fitting in, not having the kind of beauty that is considered desirable. It’s kind of a “Be Who You Are” anthem and a great sing-a-long at shows. That’s a song that can really get stuck in your head.
Will we have a new Kid Gulliver album in 2023?
We hope so! There are some songs that need to get finished, but if all goes well, we will have something new out this year. Fingers crossed.
What can you tell me about bands from the current power-pop scene like The Yum Yums and others like them?
The Yum Yum are fantastic. Morten has worn our band t-shirt in photos and that is thrilling. He has such ease writing songs. They are pretty perfect with melody, lyrics and hooks. We’d sure love to play a show with them. Can someone help us with this please?
The Courettes are great.The Darts I love. There is a fantastic group from Madrid that we shared a bill with called Boston Babies. There are too many to list.
Finally, you have recently suspended your tour in Spain. Will there be any possibility to resume the dates again?
I hope so! I don’t know when or where, but the goal is to get back to Spain and have some fun. Playing there was the best experience of my musical life and I can’t wait to go back.
