La banda se formó en 2020, pero Andrew y Rob os conocéis desde hace mucho tiempo aparte de vuestras bandas anteriores, ¿cómo habéis tardado tanto en formar The Mellons con la brillante calidad de vuestro primer álbum de larga duración?
Rob: ¡Ha sido un largo camino! Fuimos una banda de estudio durante casi un año antes de empezar a tocar en directo, y tardamos otro año en sacar el álbum a la venta debido a la escasez de vinilos. Pero todo ese tiempo nos dio la oportunidad de pensar realmente en lo que estábamos creando.
Ian: Sí, la pandemia de 2020 nos dio una buena excusa para meternos en el estudio y tomarnos nuestro tiempo para crear y dominar nuestra visión. Fue una época extraña pero emocionante.
Andrew: Antes de los Mellon, Rob y yo trabajábamos juntos, e Ian y Denney trabajaban juntos. Nos gusta decir que somos un dúo de dúos.
¿Qué pasos tuvisteis que dar para convertir la banda en un cuarteto con vuestros propios sonidos y letras?
Rob: Lo mejor de estar en una banda es colaborar. Es emocionante ver lo que cada uno aporta.
Andrew: Un par de cortes de pelo, un par de operaciones de nariz, un puñado de cuerdas de guitarra y una flauta mágica.
Denney: Andrew y Rob tuvieron que convencerme de que sus canciones eran buenas, ¡y yo tuve que convencerles de que sus canciones son increíbles! Es broma... A todos nos encanta la música pop de los 60, así que tuvimos que centrarnos en este proyecto y prestarle la atención que se merecía.
La grabación del álbum fue un reto entre vuestra propia personalidad y las influencias que la banda atesora de los sonidos de finales de los sesenta.
Ian: Queremos tomar influencias de las bandas que amamos de los 60; pero también mantener las cosas frescas añadiendo un toque moderno. Es importante equilibrar ambos aspectos a la hora de componer.
Rob: Sin duda. Nos encanta equilibrar nuestra propia individualidad con las influencias que tanto nos gustan. Honramos el rico legado musical del que disfrutamos. Pero, al fin y al cabo, queremos crear algo nuevo.
¿Qué podéis contarme sobre la grabación y la realización de "Introducing...The Mellons"?
Andrew: Hemos grabado y producido todo el álbum nosotros mismos. Creamos la mayor parte en Denney's Studio, en Salt Lake City. Personalmente, nunca antes había grabado un álbum completo, y quiero decir que fue una experiencia mística y espiritual.
Denney: Muchas de las canciones empezaron como maquetas de cada compositor, y luego fuimos construyendo y construyendo las grabaciones hasta que dejaron de ser maquetas. Hicimos muchas grabaciones en mis estudios No. 9, en el centro de Salt Lake City, y también mezclamos gran parte del disco allí. La habitación tiene unos 9 pies de ancho por 15 pies de largo, y el techo es de sólo 6 pies 4 tal vez? Así que es una habitación diminuta, pero pudimos hacer que nuestras canciones sonaran grandes cuando era necesario. Durante la grabación de este álbum aprendimos a aprovechar al máximo ese espacio. Fue muy divertido colaborar en esa sala con la banda.
¿Qué aporta cada miembro de la banda en términos de trabajo e ideas a The Mellons?
Rob: Realmente es un trabajo de equipo. La mayoría de las veces, Andrew o yo proponemos el concepto de una canción y luego trabajamos juntos para darle cuerpo. Aparte de eso, no hay una receta estándar. Nos turnamos en el bajo, la guitarra y el piano. Andrew y Denney se encargan de la producción. Ian se encarga de la batería, aunque de vez en cuando se suman otras personas. Andrew y yo hacemos la mayor parte de las letras, con aportaciones de todos los demás. Es un caos, pero muy divertido
Ian: Consideramos que cada parte e instrumento es igual de importante... ¡hasta la pandereta! Algunas canciones tienen más o menos un "dueño" en cuanto al concepto, pero creo que las canciones empiezan a cobrar vida cuando todos contribuimos y les añadimos nuestras propias personalidades... ¡y creo que nuestro disco de debut lo refleja!
Andrew: Cada uno de los Mellon tiene sus propios poderes mutantes. El de Rob es el poder del corazón, el de Andrew es el poder del aire, el de Denney es el poder del fuego y el de Ian es el poder de la tierra.
Denney: el álbum habría sido muy diferente si sólo uno de nosotros hubiera intentado crearlo, así que me alegro de que hayamos podido profundizar y de que cada uno haya contribuido con sus habilidades únicas a estas canciones tan especiales.
Para mí, en este año 2022, sois como la mejor revelación dentro de los sonidos del psych-pop o del pop barroco que suena fresco, armonizable pero con sabor añejo.
Rob: ¡Vaya, gracias! Admiramos a muchos de nuestros compañeros en este género y nos hace mucha ilusión que nos incluyan entre ellos.
Andrew: ¡Gracias! Significa mucho para nosotros.
Denney: Es un gran cumplido. Muchísimas gracias.
¿Por qué elegisteis "So much to say" como primer single de la banda?
Rob: So Much To Say fue nuestro primer single como banda. Lo elegimos porque incorporaba muchos de los aspectos sonoros de la banda que queríamos liderar. Desde el punto de vista lírico, también fue una oportunidad para decir que tenemos "mucho que decir" y que pensamos seguir produciendo música durante mucho tiempo.
Denney: Creo que esta canción podría ser la colaboración más antigua para nosotros? Le vendí mi viejo bajo Sunburst Hofner a Rob (no nos conocíamos en ese momento) en algún momento de 2017, y él y yo nos llevamos bien, charlando sobre nuestro amor mutuo por The Beatles y The Beach Boys. Me preguntó si grababa música, y entonces él y Andrew vinieron a mi estudio y grabaron algunas voces de demostración para lo que se convertiría en "So Much To Say". Por aquel entonces formaban un grupo diferente, Day Sounds, y la canción no encajaba con su sonido, así que la dejaron aparcada durante unos años hasta que llegaron los Mellons y la resucitaron. Es una divertida representación hiperazulada del aspecto del cerebro de Rob si le abres la cabeza.
En la letra hay muchos sentimientos diferentes, ¿podrías explicármelo?
Rob: Los humanos somos criaturas complejas, ¿verdad? En un mismo día podemos experimentar alegría, miedo, ira, arrepentimiento, amor y serenidad. La mayoría de nuestras canciones juegan con el hecho de que es posible sentirse feliz y triste al mismo tiempo.
Andrew: Me alegra mucho que nuestros sentimientos se reflejen en las grabaciones
¿Por qué elegisteis el título del álbum "Introducing The Mellons", es como un homenaje a los años sesenta?
Rob: Así es. Muchas bandas de esa época utilizaban ese tipo de título. Pensamos que sería divertido seguir el ejemplo.
Andrew: Pensamos que sería una forma divertida y única de presentarnos.
Denney: Los Beatles lo hicieron. Los Beau Brummels lo hicieron. Los Mellon lo hicieron.
Una sensación que me ha dejado el álbum es la grandeza de escuchar voces diferentes...
Rob: ¡Gracias por decirlo! Valoramos mucho la idea de tener diferentes cantantes y asegurarnos de que todo el mundo pueda hacer oír su voz. Otra cosa de tener varios cantantes es que podemos armonizar.
Andrew: Me alegro de que te guste. Es algo que siempre me ha gustado de los grupos de los años 60 y 70. Me encanta que cada miembro de The Mellons tenga su propio tambor vocal.
Aparte de The Beach Boys y The Beatles, ¿qué otras influencias tenéis de grupos de pop psicodélico?
Rob: The Association, Harper's Bizzare, The Turtles, The Monkees, The Zombies, de todo. También tomamos influencias modernas, aunque sean menos obvias.
Ian: Yo diría que las influencias más modernas serían Temples, MGMT, Tame Impala/Kevin Parker en general. Y nuestros buenos amigos Triptides de Los Ángeles.
Andrew: The Partidge Family, Mozzart, Bach.
¡Denney: The Left Banke, The Pretty Things, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Love, The Fallen Angels, July, Van Dyke Parks, Philip Glass, The Kinks! Algunos grupos contemporáneos serían The Lazy Eyes, Foxygen, Michael Rault, The Lemon Twigs, Pearl & The Oysters, The High Llamas.
El álbum ha sido editado por el sello Earth Libraries, un sello independiente en el que compartís trabajo con excelentes bandas como Mother Sun, ¿estáis satisfechos con la distribución que está teniendo el álbum?
Rob: Nos encanta nuestro sello. Han estado con nosotros desde el principio y sacamos mucho provecho de esta colaboración. También estamos contentos de figurar entre tantos otros artistas innovadores.

One of the best musical sensations of the last year comes from the group from Utah called, THE MELLONS, who with a first debut album "Introducing .... The Mellons" for the label Earth Libraries Records/Popstock show with great forcefulness those sounds of psychedelia-pop or baroque pop in theme by theme seasoned all this with strong melodies and voices. An album that should not go unnoticed at any time. moment. Excellent debut.

The band was formed in 2020, but Andrew and Rob have known each other for a long time apart from your previous bands, how did it take you so long to form The Mellons with the brilliant quality of your first full length album?
Rob: It’s been a long road! We were a studio band for almost a year before we started playing live, and it took us another year to get the album out the door due to vinyl shortages. But all of that time gave us an opportunity to really think about what we were crafting.
Ian: Yeah, the pandemic of 2020 gave us a good excuse to hunker down in the studio and take our time to create and master our vision. It was a weird yet exciting time!
Andrew: Before the Mellons, Rob and I worked together, and Ian and Denney worked together. We like to say that we are a duo of duos.
What steps did you have to take to turn the band into a quartet with your own sounds and lyrics?
Rob: The best part of being in a band is collaborating. It’s exciting to see what everyone brings to the table.
Andrew: A couple of hair cuts, a couple of nose-jobs, a bunch of guitar strings, and a magic flute.
Denney: Andrew & Rob had to convince me that their songs were good, & I had to convince them that their songs are amazing! Just kidding... We all really love the pop music of the 60s, so we kind of had to focus on this project & give it the attention it deserved!
The recording of the album was a challenge between your own personality and the influences that the band treasures from the sounds of the late sixties.
Ian: We want to take influence from the bands we love from the 60s; but also keep things fresh by adding a modern twist. It’s important to balance both of those aspects in our song writing.
Rob: Definitely. We’ve loved balancing our own individuality with the influences we love so much. We honor the rich legacy of music that we enjoy. But, at the end of the day, we do want to create something that’s new.
What can you tell me about the recording and making of "Introducing...The Mellons"?
Andrew: We recorded and produced the entire album ourselves. We created most of it in Denney’s Studio in Salt Lake City. I personally have never made a full album before, and I want to say that it was a mystical and spiritual experience.
Denney: A lot of the songs started out as each songwriter’s demo, & then we kept building & building the recordings until they weren’t demos anymore. We tracked a ton at my No. 9 Studios in downtown Salt Lake City, & mixed a lot of the record there as well. The room is like 9 feet wide by 15 feet long, & the ceiling is only like 6 foot 4 maybe? So it’s kind of a tiny room, but we were able to make our songs sound big when they needed to! We really learned how to maximize the use of that space through the recording of this album. It was super fun collaborating in that room with the band!
What does each member of the band contribute in terms of work and ideas to The Mellons?
Rob: It’s really a team effort. Most of the time Andrew or I come up with the concept for a song, then we work together to flesh it out. Aside from that, there’s no standard recipe. We all take turns on bass, guitar, and piano. Andrew and Denney do most of the finer production work. Ian holds down the drums, though occasionally other people will jump on the kit. Andrew and I do most of the lyrics, with input from everyone else. It’s chaos, but it’s very enjoyable.
Ian: We see each part and instrument as equally important…even down to the tambourine! Some songs more or less have an “owner” in terms of concept, but I think the songs really start to take heart when we all contribute and add our own personalities to it…and I think our debut record reflects that!
Andrew: Everyone in the Mellons has their own mutant powers. Rob’s is the power of heart, Andrew’s is the power of air, Denney’s is the power of fire, and Ian’s is the power of earth.
Denney: the album would have been so different if it was just one of us attempting to create it, so I’m glad we were able to dig in & have everyone contribute their unique skill set to these special songs!
For me in this year 2022, you are like the best revelation within the sounds of psych-pop or baroque pop that sounds fresh, harmonisable but with a vintage flavour.
Rob: Wow, thank you! We look up to a lot of our peers in this genre and we’re really tickled to be listed among them.
Andrew: Thanks! That means a lot.
Denney: that’s such a huge compliment. Thanks a ton!
Why did you choose "So much to say" as the first single of the band?
Rob: So Much To Say was our first single as a band. We picked it because it incorporated a lot of the sonic aspects of the band we wanted to lead with. Lyrically, it was also a chance for us to say that we have “so much to say,” and we plan to keep pumping out music for a long time.
Denney: I believe this song might be the oldest collaboration for us?? I sold my old Sunburst Hofner bass to Rob (we didn’t know each other at the time) sometime in 2017, & he & I got along well, chatting about our mutual love of The Beatles & The Beach Boys. He asked if I recorded music, & then he & Andrew came over to my studio & tracked some demo vocals for what would become “So Much To Say”. They were in a different band at the time called Day Sounds, & that song didn’t really fit into their sound at the time, so it was shelved for a few years until The Mellons came along & resurrected the song! It’s only right that it ended up the first single for us. Check out the music video for this one if you haven’t. It’s a fun hyper-blue representation of how Rob’s brain looks if you crack open his head!
In the lyrics there are a lot of different feelings, could you explain me this?
Rob: Humans are complex creatures, aren’t we? In a given day, we can experience joy, fear, anger, regret, love, and serenity. Most of our songs play with the fact that it’s possible to feel happy and sad at the same time.
Andrew: I am so happy that our feelings come through in the recordings.
Why did you choose the title of the album "Introducing The Mellons", it's like a tribute to the sixties?
Rob: You got it. A lot of bands from that era used that type of title. We thought it would be fun to follow suit.
Andrew: We thought it would be a fun and unique way to introduce ourselves.
Denney: The Beatles did it. The Beau Brummels did it. The Mellons did it.
One feeling I've had from the album is the greatness of hearing different voices?
Rob: Thanks for saying that! We really value the idea of having different singers and making sure everyone gets to have their voice heard. The other thing about having multiple singers is that we get to harmonize.
Andrew: Glad you like that. That is something I always enjoyed about bands from the 60s and 70s. I love how each person in the Mellons has a unique vocal tambour.
Apart from The Beach Boys and The Beatles, what other influences do you have from psychedelic pop groups?
Rob: The Association, Harper’s Bizzare, The Turtles, The Monkees, The Zombies, you name it. We draw from modern influences, too, though they may be less obvious.

The album has been released on the Earth Libraries label, an independent label where you share work with excellent bands like Mother Sun, are you satisfied with the distribution the album is getting?
Rob: We love our label. They’ve been with us since the beginning and we get a ton out of the partnership. We’re also happy to be listed among so many other innovative artists.
Ian: Earth Libraries is the best. Shout out to Bryant and Bri!
Andrew: It has been amazing to see our album going all over the country, and even all over the world! When someone posts a photograph of them with our album, it always tickles my heart.
Denney: we are so stoked to have the reception the album has gotten so far. It’s been such a wild ride, & we are here for it! When are you going to prepare a second release?
Rob: We may or may not be working on something right now. It’s too soon to officially reveal anything though.
Ian: Right. Now.
Denney: preparations are currently being made to record new Mellons music. Preparations are also being made for a couple of additional music videos for song’s off the debut LP as well… stay tuned for those!
Will it be possible to see you sometime on tour in Spain?
Rob: Send us the invite!
Ian: Absolutely.
Andrew: YES!
Denney: please bring us to a festival out there so we can make a tour out of it! Would be too much fun!
