Sí, esas fueron algunas de mis primeras influencias cuando era joven y estaba aprendiendo a tocar. También solía escuchar mucha música country americana cuando era joven.
En tu carrera musical has tenido varios proyectos musicales, algunos más conocidos y otros menos, pero después de un tiempo, ¿qué me puedes decir de estos dos grupos donde desarrollaste tu música, The Esther Caulfield Orchestra y Goodbye?
Era muy joven e inexperto cuando empecé esos viejos proyectos, e hice unas grabaciones muy burdas. Las canciones estaban bien, pero todavía estaba aprendiendo a utilizar la artesanía en mi música. Ahora, cuando escucho mi viejo material de aquella época, no lo soporto. Cada vez que escucho esas viejas grabaciones, me deprimo.
Siempre has tenido una relación muy estrecha con Andrew Gabbard, incluso para anunciar un álbum como "Gabbard & Perkins", pero hasta la fecha no ha visto la luz, ¿qué ha pasado con la publicación de ese disco?
Sí, Andrew Gabbard es un gran amigo mío. Se supone que el álbum "Gabbard & Perkins" saldrá en Colemine en algún momento del futuro.
Tu debut como E Ross Perkins en 2016 teniendo unas críticas excelentes, ¿de dónde viene la magia de tus composiciones pop-psicodélicas?
Cuando escribo música, siempre intento asegurarme de no desperdiciar la atención del oyente. Si una canción no es especial o única en algún sentido, la abandono y trabajo en otra canción más sofisticada. Nunca quiero hacer algo que sea aburrido.
Ahora mismo "E Pluribus M Ross" ya está a la venta, ¿cómo fue el desarrollo de este álbum en plena pandemia?
Grabé "E Pluribus M Ross" durante el cierre de la pandemia en 2020. En esa época en Estados Unidos también teníamos muchas protestas contra nuestro sistema policial racista, y la gente estaba tomando conciencia del neofascismo en Estados Unidos. Estas condiciones en Estados Unidos influyeron en el álbum de muchas maneras.
La grabación del álbum tuvo que hacerse en varias fases, ¿cómo fue combinar las canciones nuevas con las antiguas para este nuevo álbum?
Cogí mis canciones inéditas favoritas del pasado y las mezclé con canciones nuevas para hacer la secuencia de este álbum. Algunos de mis amigos me convencieron para que finalmente grabara y publicara las canciones antiguas. Dijeron: "Nadie ha escuchado estas canciones antes". Algunas de las más antiguas fueron escritas ya en 2007.
Se puede decir que "E Pluribus M Ross" contiene esos sonidos pop-psicodélicos coloridos, energéticos y rebeldes a lo largo de los doce temas.
Has desarrollado todo el álbum tocando tú mismo todos los instrumentos, ¿es una forma de plasmar plenamente todas las secuencias de tu propio trabajo?
Sí, en mis grabaciones toco yo mismo todos los instrumentos. Siempre prefiero trabajar solo. Es mucho más fácil para mí que trabajar con otros músicos, porque puedo hacer que la grabación suene exactamente como quiero.
Tengo entendido que eres un gran seguidor de la música psicodélica brasileña.
Me encanta la música brasileña. Me gustan especialmente Os Mutantes, Secos e Molhados y Caetano Veloso.
¿Qué piensas cuando en las críticas de sus discos le comparan con Emitt Rhodes o Harry Nilsson?
Es un honor que me comparen con artistas a los que respeto mucho, pero creo que Rhodes y Nilsson eran mucho mejores músicos que yo. Me gusta mucho su música.
¿Le veremos alguna vez de gira por España?
Algún día, sería genial tocar en España. Yo amo la cultura, la lengua, y la música de España. Aprecio también la historia política de España, y creo que América podría aprender mucho de esta historia. Tengo mucho respeto por la gente de su país, y ustedes son muy amables sobre mi música. Lo aprecio mucho.
¿Qué próximos proyectos tiene M Ross Perkins para este 2022?
Ahora mismo estoy empezando a escribir mi próximo álbum. Aunque creo que me llevará mucho tiempo.

Second work of this excellent composer from Ohio under the title "E Pluribus m Ross" where he condenses twelve brilliant pieces of psychedelia, pop and folk with roots well established in the sixties and seventies, with a fresh spirit that brings together yesterday and today in an attractive and shiny way.
You currently have two full-length albums, but let's take a look back to your beginnings and we can say that your musical influences have revolved around The Beatles, Robert Pollard or Van Morrison among others?
Yes, those were some of my early influences when I was young and learning to play. I used to listen to a lot of American country music when I was young too.
In your musical career you have had several musical projects, some more known and others less known, but after some time, what can you tell me about these two groups where you developed your music, The Esther Caulfield Orchestra and Goodbye?
I was very young and inexperienced when I started those old projects, and I made some very crude recordings. The songs were okay, but I was still learning how to use craftsmanship in my music. Now when I listen to my old material from that time, I can't stand it. Whenever I listen to those old recordings, I just get depressed.
You have always had a very close relationship with Andrew Gabbard even to announce an album as "Gabbard & Perkins", but to date it has not seen the light, what happened with the release of that album?
Yes, Andrew Gabbard is a great friend of mine. The "Gabbard & Perkins" album is supposed to be released on Colemine at some point in the future.
Your debut as E Ross Perkins in 2016 having some excellent reviews, where does the magic of your pop-psychedelic compositions come from?
When I write music, I am always trying to make sure that I am not wasting the listener's attention. If a song is not special or unique in some way, then I abandon it and work on a different song that is more sophisticated instead. I never want to make something that is boring.
Right now "E Pluribus M Ross" is already out, how was the development of this album in full pandemic?
I recorded "E Pluribus M Ross" during the pandemic lockdown in 2020. At that time in the United States, we also had many protests against our racist police system, and people were becoming aware of neo-fascism in America. These conditions in America influenced the album in many ways.
The recording of the album had to be done in several phases, how was it to combine new songs with old ones for this new album?
I took my favorite unreleased songs from the past and mixed them with new songs to make the sequence for this album. Some of my friends convinced me to finally record and release the old songs. They said, "No one has ever heard these songs before." Some of the oldest ones were written as early as 2007.
"E Pluribus M Ross" can be said to contain those colorful, energetic and rebellious pop-psychedelic sounds throughout the twelve tracks.
You have developed the whole album playing all the instruments yourself, is it a way to fully capture all the sequences of your own work?
Yes, on my recordings, I play all of the instruments myself. I always prefer to work alone. It is much easier for me than working with other musicians, because I can make the recording sound exactly how I want it.
I understand that you are a big follower of Brazilian psychedelic music.
I love Brazilian music. I especially like Os Mutantes, Secos e Molhados, and Caetano Veloso.
What do you think when in the reviews of your albums you are compared to Emitt Rhodes or Harry Nilsson?
It is an honor to be compared to artists whom I respect very much, but I think that Rhodes and Nilsson were much better musicians than me. I love their music very much.
Will we ever see you on tour in Spain?
One day, it would be great to play in Spain. Yo amo la cultura, la lengua, y la música de España. Right now, I am beginning to write my next album. It will probably take me a long time though, I think. Thank you for asking me these questions.
