Juancar, han pasado años desde nuestra primera entrevista en El Templo del Gato con motivo del concierto de Los Clavos en Madrid y lo primero que me sorprendió de ti fue esa pasión que tenías en todo momento sobre el rock and roll, han pasado años, ¿sigues conservando esa misma pasión en la actualidad?
Desde los siete u ocho años la música ha sido parte esencial de mi vida y lo sigue siendo. Aficiones tengo muchas y muy distintas, y a veces alguna durante temporadas se convierte en prioritaria; pero el Rock & Roll es una pasión constante. De la que sí es cierto que hay etapas en las que necesito cierta desintoxicación para luego volver con más ganas.
Tu paso por Los Clavos, Bonzos, Help Me Devil y ahora otra vez con Bonzos, ¿qué te ha aportado cada proyecto en tu devenir musical?
Los Clavos fueron mi escuela de muchas cosas, grabamos dos discos en Francia que todavía son añorados y buscados, tuvimos mucha repercusión y no paramos de tocar pero sin embargo nunca he tenido nostalgia de esos años. Demasiada oscuridad.
Help Me Devil me ayudó muchísimo a crecer como músico y como compositor. Grabamos los dos primeros discos en Nueva York con Matt Verta-Ray como productor , y un tercero publicado en el 2020 en Bilbao. Hemos girado por toda España y media Europa y aunque actualmente el grupo está hibernando no puedo descartar reactivarlo algún día.
Y Bonzos en este momento es la banda en la que estoy centrado al 100%. La recepción por parte de los fans de toda la vida del último disco, “Songs About Cars, Girls & Broken Hearts”, ha sido magnifica y la suma de estas canciones con las de los primeros discos han funcionado en los conciertos de maravilla.
Hace poco reeditaste el magnífico trabajo "341 Broome St" en forma de vinilo, ¿cómo diste este paso de rescatar este trabajo?.
Es un disco que realmente nunca salió en vinilo. Hay cuatro o cinco copias (yo al menos tengo una) pero nunca hemos sabido lo que realmente pasó con el resto.
Como se publico en el 97 este año era su 25 aniversario; así que nos pareció que era una excelente ocasión para reeditarlo en vinilo cuidando todos los detalles: master, 180 gramos, carpeta doble y edición limitada de 341 copias numeradas que ya están prácticamente agotadas (pueden quedar todavía algunas copias en Power Records de Bilbao, en Flappers en Getxo y en Chopper Monster en Madrid)
Vamos a la plena actualidad, lo primero que nos encontramos es el paso definitivo de irte a vivir de nuevo a Getxo después de pasar varios años en Madrid.
Definitivo conmigo nunca hay nada. Pero es cierto que después de casi veinte muy felices años viviendo en Madrid mi regreso a casa ha superado, a pesar de la pandemia, todas mis expectativas y estoy encantado. Es mi tierra y tenía desde hace ya tiempo muchas ganas de regresar.
Después de un trabajo anterior con letras en castellano y siendo cuatro componentes dentro del grupo has vuelto a trío y aderezadas en letras en inglés, ¿no quedaste muy contento de esta etapa?
Tengo muchísimo cariño a “Misión Suicida” me parece un gran disco y me consta que para mucha gente es un disco muy especial. Pero creo que el esqueleto de Bonzos es ese primer disco que grabamos en Nueva York con Andy Shernof; así que la mezcla de castellano-inglés me resultaba extraña. La gente además quiere - queremos - escuchar las canciones que ya conoce, por lo queque había una cierta decepción cuando se encontraban con un repertorio nuevo que no conocían. Querían los hits del primer disco. Y ahora entiendo que tenían razón.
Ahora ya tienes un nuevo artefacto "Songs about cars , girls & broken hearts" para el sello Family Spree Recordings, ¿cómo fuiste dándole forma a este trabajo en letras y sonidos?
Tenía claro que era el disco que debía haber compuesto tras el primero. Volver a Getxo, a la misma casa en la que compuse el primero me lo puso fácil. El concepto era claro, formato trio, energía, melodía, velocidad, canciones cortas y en inglés.
Una foto, sobre la que basamos la maravillosa portada - obra de Mario Riviere -, me sirvió para crear todo el universo lírico de las dieciocho canciones del disco.
¿Cuánto tiempo te ha llevado la elaboración del disco?
Compuse dieciséis canciones en apenas dos semanas, luego dediqué varios meses a trabajarlas. Eliminando todo lo que me parecía innecesario en las estructuras y a la vez armando tosas las letras. Cuando ya estaba prácticamente el disco grabado compuse dos canciones más (casualmente las dos ultimas de la cara B) porque me parecía que el disco necesitaba ese final.
¿Tenías claro desde un principio este disco iba a ser grabado en los Estudios Silver Recordings a los mandos de Martin Cápsula?
La verdad es que sí por muchas razones. He grabado en los últimos años cinco discos con Martín. Tres de Bonzos, uno de Help Me Devil y el de FGOTM, (l duo electrónico Suicide que tengo con Eneko Cepeda). Así que para mi es como estar en casa. Además, por la pandemia no podíamos ensayar y tuve que grabar yo solo todas las canciones para que Ricky y Jorge conociesen las canciones antes de grabar sus partes y todo ese proceso Martín lo hace muy fácil.
¿Cómo se desarrolló en la grabación ese binomio Parlange-Martin Cápsula para la consecución total del disco?
Decidimos producirlo juntos porque trabajamos muy bien en equipo. Ambos nos respetamos y admiramos mutuamente y siempre la opinión del otro enriquece el resultado final.
Creo además que probablemente a estas alturas lo lógico es que en todos los discos de Bonzos yo también participe como productor.
Destacaría del disco esa energía para afrontar esos sonidos de punk-rock y power-pop a lo largo de todos los surcos ¿es un disco directo y energético al mismo tiempo?
Sí, hemos aplicado el “menos es más” como máxima regla. Y queríamos que fuese una continuación del espíritu del primer disco.
Se nota en su conjunto esa personalidad propia de Bonzos actual acompañada con esa actitud juvenil y energética como en vuestros primeros tiempos.
Exacto. La verdad es que me resultó super fácil componer todas las canciones y algunas de ellas me parecen de lo mejor que he escrito nunca. Animo a la vieja guardia, y por supuesto a la nueva también, a que dediquen 28 minutos a escuchar esas 18 canciones.
Desde tu interior Juancar, ¿cómo definirías globalmente este nuevo artefacto?.
Pues probablemente es el disco del que más orgulloso estoy. Este y el primero de Help Me Devil. El 341 me encanta pero las letras no están al mismo nivel que todo lo demás. En este en cambio las letras me encantan y disfruto muchísimo al cantarlas.
Si tuviera que destacar de Bonzos como grupo sería esas guitarras energéticas, melodías y esos estribillos tan contagiosos y paladeantes.
Sí, totalmente, alma punk y corazón pop.
¿Quienes forman actualmente Bonzos en forma de trío?
Ricky a la batería y Jorge al bajo. Son los Bonzos más Bonzos que ha habido nunca. Y en directo tenemos esa química qué tan difícil es de conseguir. Así que espero que está sea la formación definitiva porque mejor va a ser imposible encontrar.
Siempre has tenido un espíritu inquieto, pero también te has exigido mucho a la hora de abordar un nuevo trabajo como es en este caso "Songs about,cars,girls & broken hearts"
¿Estas en uno de tus mejores momentos de creatividad y composición de temas?
Yo nunca me he considerado músico, no tengo la disciplina ni el talento para dominar un instrumento, pero a cambio tengo esa creatividad y esa pasión que me permiten querer siempre componer nuevas y mejores canciones.
Y supongo que después de tantos años uno ya tiene un cierto oficio para escribir.
Juancar, sé que no paras y después de una viene otra, ¿Ya se están preparando nuevos proyectos para Bonzos?
En nada entramos a grabar una canción muy especial “Crush On You” que saldrá en abril como single. Es una canción del tercer disco pero ha cobrado un significado especial y que he querido adaptar letra y música a este 2022 y a esta formación.
A nivel conciertos tenemos ya cerradas bastantes fechas y la verdad es que estamos con muchísimas ganas de tocar y tocar este repertorio.
¿Hasta cuándo seguirás con ese espíritu y energía por el rock and roll?
Mira, ahora me ha dado por boxear y me está robando mucho tiempo y energía. Pero el Rock & Roll es mi religión. Es ese amigo que nunca te falla.
Y es curioso, porque según esta película que es la vida se va haciendo cada día más complicada (algo que yo pensaba que iba a ser lo contrario) más necesito la banda sonora de la música para disfrutarla, entenderla y aceptarla.
Así que supongo que seguiré así hasta el ultimo aliento.

Good vibes in recent months for Juancar Parlange and his Bonzos. On the one hand, the reissue for the first time on vinyl of "341 Broome St" and, on the other, the appearance of a new artefact by the group for the Family Spree Recordings label, "Songs about cars, girls & broken heart" in which the sounds of the punk-rock and power-pop are still at a high level. They continue to show that they have that youthful spirit and to recover that essence in their songs full of energy and melody. Let's catch up on Bonzos' current moment with his alma mater Juancar Parlange.
Juancar, years have passed since our first interview at El Templo del Gato on the occasion of the Los Clavos concert in Madrid and the first thing that surprised me about you was that passion you had at all times about rock and roll, years have passed, ¿ Do you still have that same passion today?
Since I was seven or eight years old, music has been an essential part of my life and it still is. I have many and very different hobbies, and sometimes one during seasons becomes a priority; but Rock & Roll is a constant passion. Of which it is true that there are stages in which I need a certain detoxification and then return with more desire.
Your time with Los Clavos, Bonzos, Help Me Devil and now again with Bonzos, what has each project contributed to your musical future?
Los Clavos were my school of many things, we recorded two albums in France that are still longed for and sought after, we had a lot of repercussions and we didn't stop playing but nevertheless I have never been nostalgic for those years. Too dark.
Help Me Devil helped me a lot to grow as a musician and as a composer. We recorded the first two albums in New York with Matt Verta-Ray as producer, and a third one released in 2020 in Bilbao. We have toured all over Spain and half of Europe and although the group is currently hibernating, I cannot rule out reactivating it one day.
And Bonzos right now is the band I'm 100% focused on. The reception from lifelong fans of the latest album, "Songs About Cars, Girls & Broken Hearts", has been magnificent and the addition of these songs with those of the first albums have worked wonderfully in concerts.
You recently reissued the magnificent work "341 Broome St" in vinyl form, how did you take this step to rescue this work?
It's a record that never really came out on vinyl. There are four or five copies (I have at least one) but we have never known what really happened to the rest.
As published in 1997, this year was its 25th anniversary; so we thought it was an excellent opportunity to reissue it on vinyl taking care of all the details: master, 180 grams, double folder and limited edition of 341 numbered copies that are practically sold out (there may still be some copies on Power Records in Bilbao, in Flappers in Getxo and Chopper Monster in Madrid)
Let's go to the present, the first thing we find is the definitive step of going to live in Getxo again after spending several years in Madrid.
Definitely with me there is never anything. But it is true that after almost twenty very happy years living in Madrid, my return home has exceeded all my expectations, despite the pandemic, and I am delighted. It is my land and I have long wanted to return.
After a previous job with lyrics in Spanish and being four components within the group, you have returned to a trio and seasoned with lyrics in English, weren't you very happy with this stage?
I'm very fond of “Misión Suicida” I think it's a great album and I know that for many people it's a very special album. But I think the skeleton of Bonzos is that first album we recorded in New York with Andy Shernof; so the mixture of Spanish-English was strange to me. People also want - we want - to listen to the songs they already know, so there was a certain disappointment when they found a new repertoire that they didn't know. They wanted the hits from the first album. And now I understand that they were right.
Now you have a new artifact "Songs about cars, girls & broken hearts" for the Family Spree Recordings label, how did you go about shaping this work in letters and sounds?
It was clear to me that it was the album that I should have composed after the first one. Going back to Getxo, to the same house where I composed the first one, made it easy for me. The concept was clear, trio format, energy, melody, speed, short songs and in English.
A photo, on which we based the wonderful cover - the work of Mario Riviere -, helped me to create the entire lyrical universe of the eighteen songs on the album.
How long has it taken you to make the album?
I wrote sixteen songs in just two weeks, then spent several months working on them. Eliminating everything that seemed unnecessary to me in the structures and at the same time putting together all the letters. When the album was practically recorded, I wrote two more songs (coincidentally the last two on side B) because it seemed to me that the album needed that ending.
Did you have it clear from the beginning that this album was going to be recorded at the Silver Recordings Studios under the command of Martin Cápsula?
The truth is yes for many reasons. In recent years I have recorded five albums with Martín. Three from Bonzos, one from Help Me Devil and one from FGOTM, (the electronic duo Suicide that I have with Eneko Cepeda). So for me it's like being at home. Also, due to the pandemic we couldn't rehearse and I had to record all the songs by myself so that Ricky and Jorge knew the songs before recording their parts and Martín makes this whole process very easy.
How did that Parlange-Martin Cápsula binomial develop in the recording for the total achievement of the album?
We decided to produce it together because we work very well as a team. We both respect and admire each other and the other's opinion always enriches the final result.
I also think that probably at this point the logical thing is that in all the Bonzos albums I also participate as a producer.
I would highlight from the album that energy to face those sounds of punk-rock and power-pop along all the grooves. Is it a direct and energetic album at the same time?
Yes, we have applied the “less is more” principle. And we wanted it to be a continuation of the spirit of the first album.
As a whole, you can see that personality of Bonzos today accompanied by that youthful and energetic attitude as in your early days.
Exactly. The truth is that it was super easy for me to compose all the songs and some of them seem to me to be the best I've ever written. I encourage the old guard, and of course the new guard too, to spend 28 minutes listening to those 18 songs.
From inside you Juancar, how would you globally define this new artifact?
Well, it's probably the album I'm most proud of. This and the first from Help Me Devil. I love the 341 but the letters are not on the same level as everything else. In this one, on the other hand, I love the lyrics and I really enjoy singing them.
If I had to highlight Bonzos as a group it would be those energetic guitars, melodies and those choruses that are so contagious and palatable.
Yes, totally, punk soul and pop heart.
Who currently form Bonzos as a trio?
Ricky on drums and Jorge on bass. They are the Bonzos more Bonzos that there have ever been. And live we have that chemistry how difficult it is to achieve. So I hope this is the definitive formation because it will be impossible to find a better one.
You have always had a restless spirit, but you have also demanded a lot of yourself when approaching a new job, as in this case "Songs about, cars, girls & broken hearts"
Are you in one of your best moments of creativity and songwriting?
I have never considered myself a musician, I don't have the discipline or the talent to master an instrument, but instead I have that creativity and that passion that allow me to always want to compose new and better songs.
And I suppose that after so many years one already has a certain craft to write.
Juancar, I know you don't stop and after one comes another, are you already preparing new projects for Bonzos?
In no time we entered to record a very special song "Crush On You" that will be released in April as a single. It is a song from the third album but it has taken on a special meaning and I have wanted to adapt lyrics and music to this 2022 and to this formation.
At the concert level we have already closed quite a few dates and the truth is that we really want to play and play this repertoire.
How long will you continue with that spirit and energy for rock and roll?
Look, now I've taken up boxing and it's taking up a lot of my time and energy. But Rock & Roll is my religion. He is that friend who never fails you.
And it's funny, because according to this film that is life is becoming more complicated every day (something that I thought would be the opposite) the more I need the soundtrack of the music to enjoy it, understand it and accept it.
So I guess I'll keep it up until my last breath.
